Alberta’s new hazardous and special products (HSP) program has officially launched, ushering in a new era of environmental stewardship in the province.
The collection of regulated HSP would not be possible without the partnership of Alberta communities. Product Care is grateful for your support, patience, and enthusiasm during the lead-up to launch, and we look forward to working together in the months ahead.
Education and promotion materials
An important component of program success is educating residents on accepted products and recycling locations. In addition to releasing a digital advertising campaign to raise consumer awareness, Product Care is pleased to share a suite of digital and print assets that are available for communities to leverage as part of their existing waste communications.
Communications for HHW + HSP communities
Alberta has a well-established household hazardous waste (HHW) program that many Alberta communities have opted to maintain in addition to the collection of HSPs. As HSP is a subset of HHW, promoting a HSP program separate from the existing HHW program may add confusion and complexity for residents and consumers. To avoid confusion, and to support diverting product from landfills, Product Care will not brand the HSP program separately for these communities. Instead, promotion materials will utilize “household hazardous waste” terminology and will speak high-level to the need to return residential hazardous materials to municipal collection sites. Detailed information about the HSP program and accepted products can be found at productcare.org/alberta.
As a reminder – HSP will be separated from HHW products at the operational level, but these details are not deemed essential for consumers to know.
Communications for HSP-only communities
Communities who have opted to collect only HSP will have access to promotion materials that utilize HSP terminology and outline accepted program products.
