Accepted Products
For safety reasons, all products (except gasoline) must be in their original container with original label(s) intact to be accepted by the program. We can’t accept containers that have no label, are leaking, or are improperly sealed. Do not mix different products together.
For all products (except gasoline) the maximum container size is 10 litres/kg. The maximum pressurized/aerosol container size is 680g / 24oz.
Accepted Products:
Domestic Pesticides & containers
We accept domestic pesticides in liquid, solid, and pressurized containers . To be accepted, the product label must have:
- The Pest Control Product (PCP) number
- The word ‘domestic’
- The word ‘DANGER’ or ‘WARNING’ together with a black hexagon OR diamond symbol
Examples:
- Weed killer
- Hornet killer
- Rat poison
Toxics & containers
We accept liquid, solid, and aerosol toxics. To be accepted, the product label must show the toxic hazard symbol described in the consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations
Examples:
- Automotive additives
- Automotive parts cleaners
- Tar remover
- Bug remover
Corrosives & containers
We accept liquid, solid, and aerosol corrosives. To be accepted, the product label must show the corrosive hazard symbol described in the consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations.
Examples:
- Grout cleaner
- Masonry cleaner
- Rust remover
- Kitchen cleaner
- All-purpose cleaner
- Ammonia
Flammables & containers
We accept liquid and aerosol flammables. To be accepted, the product label must show the flammable hazard symbol described in the Consumer Chemicals and containers Regulations.
Examples:
- Acetone
- BBQ Lighter fluid
- Camping fuel
- Fondue fuel
- Flammable degreasers
- Flammable fuel treatment and additives
- Flammable liquid adhesives
- Flammable lubricants
- Kerosene
- Methanol
- Methyl hydrate
- Non-refillable fuel cylinders
Flammables – Gasoline
To be accepted, gasoline must be returned in a 25L or smaller sealed jerry/gas can.
Not Accepted Products:
Examples of non-accepted products*:
- Any product whose primary, intended use is ‘down-the-drain’ (eg. Drain opener, bleach)
- Non-hazardous products such as whip cream, deodorant, biodegradable cleaners, non-flammable isopropyl alcohol.
- Insect repellents intended for personal use
- Sanitizers, disinfectants, and anti-microbial products
- Solvents, thinners, mineral spirits, and paint strippers
- Flammable products intended for use related to paint are designated materials under ARMA’s Paint Stewardship Program, and are NOT accepted as part of HSP. Please visit Recycling Resources for Albertans – ARMA to learn how to return these products.
- Ammunition
- Batteries
- Biodegradable cleaners
- Caulking compound
- Commercial, industrial or agricultural products
- Diesel
- Cosmetics and beauty products (e.g. perfume, deodorant)
- Drugs, medicines, and other health products
- Medical sharps
- Fertilizer
- Mercury switches
- Oil and antifreeze
- Powder forms (solid) of masonry products, cement, grout, mortar, plaster of Paris
- Refillable propane cylinders
- Wine and distilled spirits
*While these products are not HSP accepted products, some may still be accepted by your local community operated HHW facility or collection event. Check with your local community to confirm if these non-HSP products can be accepted.
